The "Art" of Supporting Those in Need
Local Photographer Lends a Hand to Domestic Violence Service Provider

November 29, 2005 , Suffolk County , NY- Domestic violence in an ongoing problem in Suffolk County . Thousands of women and children are victimized each year. Victims are in need of shelter and supportive services in order to prevent future incidents of violence in their own lives. The Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (SCCADV) has provided services in Suffolk County since their incorporation in 1976. Their vital services are provided pro bono and funding is crucial to sustaining their program. Cheryl Machat Dorskind has helped to ensure SCCADV 's services are maintained by lending her talents. Each year, critical fundraising for SCCADV is conducted through the Annual Awards Dinner. This dinner honors those who have made a difference in domestic violence awareness and within our communities. A sweepstakes held each year at the dinner helps raise necessary funds for many of SCCADV 's programs. For eighteen years, Ms. Dorskind has very kindly contributed a piece of work to this event. Her work is among those gifts raffled off as grand prizes. Those attending the dinner annually are always eager and excited to have a chance to win one of Ms. Dorskind's works.

Ms. Dorskind is an acclaimed Long Island fine art photographer and hand painter known for her highly personal approach to portraiture. Her photography has been published in newspapers and magazines including Country Living , House , The New York Times , and as cover art for best-selling novels such as Ann Beattie's Falling In Place and Chilly Scenes of Winter . The author of the definitive guide to hand coloring photographs, The Art of Handpainting Photographs , Ms. Dorskind shares her love of photography throughout her books and by teaching and mentoring at colleges and art institutions. However, in addition to being a wonderful artist, Ms. Dorskind also contributes time and talent to the community, as a member of SCCADV 's Honorary Board.

The support of the community and those who have talents to share, like Ms. Dorskind, is important to helping SCCADV accomplish their goals. It is the mission of SCCADV to empower victims of domestic violence through a wide range of services, while working to end domestic violence.
